Low Embodied Carbon Designs

Low Embodied Carbon Designs DURATION: 1.5 hour 1.5 GBCI general education hours. Taking a whole-life carbon approach, one where we consider both the embodied carbon & operational carbon emissions associated with a building, is a key element on the path to fighting climate change. It's not enough to just focus on the carbon impact associated with building energy use; we need to consider the carbon impact at every stage, from extraction of materials to end-life of a building. Design teams have an opportunity to show leadership when it comes to reducing embodied carbon in the built environment, while making better informed decisions and recommendations for the building owner. This course will inform design teams on what actions, at each stage of design, are appropriate to reduce embodied carbon. It will explore general considerations per materials and building elements, including structure, façade, interiors, and building services. The topic of how to carry out life cycle assessments in a consistent way that is aligned with Canadian policies and local framework will also be discussed. Finally, the course will present the different types of data and tools available related to life-cycle assessment, highlighting synergies and differences. Real case studies and useful resources, existing targets and benchmarks will be also presented. This course is delivered by the following individuals from Integral Group: Louise Hamot, Leonardo Poli, and Jeremy Field. Funding for this course provided by Forestry Innovation Investment (FII).
