Wood and Embodied Carbon for Zero-Carbon Building DURATION: 1 hour 1 GBCI general education hour. Owners and designers are increasingly targeting embodied carbon reductions in their buildings. Many strategies exist to reduce the embodied carbon of materials, including using lower carbon concrete, steel, and insulation products. One increasingly popular strategy is to use less traditional structural materials and instead use more wood-based products including light timber (stick-frame), and mass timber. Wood-based products have unique considerations related to embodied carbon, including forest management and carbon sequestration. This course will provide an overview of the key topics related to the embodied carbon of wood as it relates to low-carbon buildings. Topics include embodied carbon lifecycle of building material products; forest carbon cycle and responsible forest management; carbon sequestration; overview of various structural wood products; environmental product declarations (EPDs); calculation tools and methodologies; considerations when building with wood; carbon impact of building with wood; and related case studies. Course participants will be better equipped to provide embodied carbon support to wood-based projects. This course is delivered by Zahra Teshnizi of Mantle Developments.
