Reddit Culture

The Reddit community is extremely skeptical of marketers and diligent about policing spam. Any such activity is quickly downvoted out of sight.

Whereas brands are encouraged to connect with users on Facebook and Twitter, the Reddit community is generally uninterested in marketers intruding on the conversation.

There are rare exceptions, however. Very savvy marketers have found a way into Reddit by creating content the community is genuinely interested in.

There are also a few aspects of Reddit culture that you should be aware of:

  • Reddit is extremely self-referential - If you see something posted that doesn't make sense, it's likely referencing an aspect of Reddit culture (a previous post, a meme - something popular from the site).
  • Hivemind - Reddit is witty and sharp, and that applies to all aspects of the site, including responses to foolish comments and posts.
  • Stealth Ban - Reddit has a unique way to ban spammers, its called stealth ban. In this way Reddit ban a spammer silently. It means, the user can do all works normally, but it won't be publicly visible. To check to see if you've been stealth banned, copy the URL to a submission of yours, then log in with a second account and if you can see the link, you're ok.
