In Pokémon Go, quantity is key. You might not want a whole flock of Zubats, but there's strength in numbers-or more specifically Stardust and Candy.
When you capture Pokémon, you'll receive both items, which are used, respectively, to power up and evolve Pokémon.
Catching pokémon works mostly like you'd expect: you simply walk around with the app open on your phone--which buzzes when pokémon are nearby.
Catching your first Pokémon is fairly straight forward, and once you catch it, the other two starting Pokémon will disappear. However, finding your next Pokémon isn't quite so easy; you'll need to venture outside to find more Pokémon.

Note: Pokémon are found at different CP (Combat Power) levels,
which more or less determines how powerful the pokémon will be. To
raise a pokémon's CP, you'll need two resources: stardust (a
generic item you obtain with each pokémon that you catch) and the
pokémon's specific candy (which can be obtained by catching
duplicates of the pokémon you want to level up).
