The history of cannabis legalization in Thailand is an interesting and evolving one. Cannabis has deep roots in Thai culture and traditional medicine, but its legal status has undergone significant changes over the years.
Criminalization: In 1979, Thailand enacted the Narcotics Act, which classified cannabis as a Schedule 5 narcotic substance. This move criminalized the possession, cultivation, and distribution of cannabis, reflecting a global trend towards stricter drug control policies.
On 9 June 2022 however, all cannabis plant parts were entirely removed from the narcotic list, decriminalizing all cannabis-related crime. Around 4,200 prisoners were released as a result of the decriminalisation on the same day. This historic date put Thailand on the World Map as the third country (Uruguay, July 2017; Canada, October 2018) to allow for legal sale of cannabis by its people and for its people.
