Advanced Building Science Spring Camp 2018

May 14, 2018

For three days each spring, residential and large building professionals, building science professionals, energy advisors, utilities, manufacturers and government representatives gather together at the Advanced Building Science Spring Camp, organized by Building Knowledge Canada and The McLeod Associates to take part in important and timely discussions and learning sessions.

YOUR HOSTS

Hosted by Good Cooke, Tex McLeod and Andy Oding, this year's Spring Camp covered topics relating to prefabrication, radon, designing for thermal comfort, Net Zero mechanical hybrid fuel solutions and modular and panelized components in residential construction. The program also included a rousing and fun debate and an update from Ottawa.

TALKING ADVANCED BUILDING SCIENCE

An interactive session from Construction Instruction, lead by Justin Wilson and Mark Laliberte, focused on water management and effective window installation in home construction. Attendees were able to see first-hand how to improve the window installation processes to prevent common damage that often occurs from moisture.

As part of Camp's ongoing commitment to explore new ways of sharing information, the debate format was used to address the role of natural gas for residences in a low carbon economy. Proponents and opponents argued for or against houses using natural gas for heating and utilizing the PV only to charge electric vehicles. Where would you land in this discussion?

Alex Ferguson with NRCan expanded on the topic of hybrid technologies. Alex previously presented this to the CHBA Technical Research Committee, and at Andy's request came to speak to this year's attendees to share their newest findings on the use of hybrid/dual fuel systems vs complete conversion to all electric systems.

Monday night's open mic session brought insights and some exciting updates from Fanshawe College and NRCan's Net Zero student housing retrofit, Canadian Wood Council, Gail Lawlor and the work with housing in James Bay, a church /housing Nz retrofit with Habitat Studios and a stirring commentary on the real carbon vs energy targets by Melinda Zytaruk.

As part of his ongoing commitment to give back, Doug Tarry's Hope Augua Vita project was highlighted. Dedicated to creating safer, more sustainable communities, hurricane resistant homes, providing clean drinking water & solar energy, Doug Tarry Homes is raising funds for this cause. We were thrilled to raise $3,000 through a raffle for Doug's great project. This money will go a long way to helping the people of Puerto Rico rebuild after Hurricane Maria.
