Where She Lives

Babies are curious, so your baby will want to explore. It's your job to monitor her explorations, and to create a safe environment so that she can follow her natural curiosities.

Heavy furniture should be anchored to the wall. Keep stairs clear of items that could cause a fall. Electrical cords should be out of reach or secured behind furniture. Be certain lamps cannot be toppled over. Televisions should be secured.

If the doorbell rings or you need to run upstairs for something, always bring your baby with you. It's never a good idea to leave them unattended. It's acceptable to leave them in a crib momentarily while you take a bathroom break, or change a hamper, but leaving them in a room unattended is never a good idea.

When it comes to securing your home, there are a few things we suggest you do:

  • Your hot water heater should be set below 120 degrees F
  • Each level in your home should have smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors
  • Safety gates should be installed at the head and foot of each staircase
  • Cover all electrical outlets
  • Check your basement to ensure hazardous substances are in airtight containers, and out of reach (preferably locked up).
  • Install 'pinch guards' on door hinges
  • Remove poisonous house plants
  • Cover sharp furniture edges and corners with protective foam.
  • Install latches on drawers and cupboard doors
  • Install non-slip pads under rugs or light furniture
  • Check blinds and curtains with cords, and install cord stops
