Want to "wear" your baby? You're not alone. Baby carriers have existed -- in one form or another -- for thousands of years. Baby carriers have gained popularity in recent years.

There's a reason for that, though:

  • Many carriers allow for discreet breastfeeding while on the go, or in public.
  • Some babies breastfeed better on the move
  • Hands-free caring for older siblings, since they need your attention too
  • It can calms a fussy or colicky baby.
  • Optimal learning opportunities: it encourages visual and auditory alertness
  • More exposure to language: It improves cognitive and speech development
  • It also increases bonding opportunities

Baby carriers come in a wide array of styles and different baby positioning possibilities. Talk with other moms and "test drive" baby carriers before you settle on a specific brand. There's plenty to choose from, and it's very important that you purchase a carrier that meets all of your needs.

Tips and Tricks:

  • For winter-wear, use an overlarge coat (or reuse your maternity coat). Zip it over both of you.
  • keep newborns high in carriers so you can monitor their airway. Make sure to keep two fingers between the chest and chin
  • The higher up the baby is seated, the easier it will be on your back
  • Avoid dangling, or straight legs to minimize risk of hip dysplasia
