We've covered the basics. Hopefully your home has been
child-proofed, and you are convinced your baby's area of sleep and
play are safe.
You're almost there, but, child safety needs to be looked at
from different angles.
Now it's time to think about overall safety in specific
categories of injury and focus on prevention and care of specific
injuries.
Prevention
Burns and Fire Safety:
- Kitchens are the most dangerous room for your child to be
exposed to burns.
- Adequate supervision is the best prevention
- Check smoke alarms monthly
- Create an escape plan
- Teach young children the meaning of "hot"
- Supervise children in the kitchen. Use back burners, and keep
hot foods away from the edge of counters
- Turn pot handles inward, and install a stove guard
- Avoid the use of tablecloths. Children often pull, and spill,
hot food on themselves
- Your water heater temperature should be 120 degrees F
Poison:
- All products should be in child-resistant packaging
- Never call medicine candy
- Store all products, and medicines, in locked cupboards
- Keep products in their original containers
- Teach your child to ask permission before tasting anything
- Check your carbon monoxide alarm regularly
