In 2018 we decided to include the "shift boss" shifts along with the regular volunteer shifts. This worked very well as we had a dedicated volunteer to lead each shift. The shift lead shifts were created in MySchoolAnywhere and the start times for these shifts precede the regular shifts by 5-10 minutes so that the shift lead can get organized and devise a plan before the volunteers arrive. Usually, the shift lead from the previous shift leaves a detailed list with what was accomplished during their shift and what needs to be done going forward.
Someone who has experience with the book sale is preferred for these shifts. We open up the sign-up early for these shifts so that they can be filled by steering committee members or experienced book sale volunteers. We simply send out an email asking committee members to sign-up before we send out the general volunteer email to all parents. 2 weeks is usually sufficient to get the shift lead schedule filled.
When volunteers complete their shift, they are given Volunteer Night "Tickets". This serves as their admission to the pre-sale that takes place the night before the sale to the public.
In 2019, we decided to add a volunteer prize to the sale. Every volunteer gets to fill out a ballot for each shift that volunteer. That ballot goes into a raffle box. The winner (s) will be selected at the end of the sale.
