Study Your Competitors

The best way to quickly enter a new niche or market is to have a look at what the current market leaders (your competitors) are doing. There are a few different free and paid tools that can help you evaluate their marketing activities.

  • Start by listing the top 5 competitors in your niche market. It's important to keep competitors on your radar and observe how they are trying to grow their fan base
  • Use sites like Alexa.com and Follow.net to get a general idea of what your competitor's audience "looks" like in terms of gender, location, where are they browsing from, and more.
  • Tools like SEMrush and KeywordSpy enable you to get an idea of what keywords competitors are targeting in order to increase their reach and drive traffic
  • A social media monitoring tool like Hootsuite or SproutSocial can also enable you to monitor many different individuals, organizations or keyword searches at once to really stay connected to your target audience and their needs.
  • Google Alerts are also still an effective way of receiving a digest (daily, weekly or as they happen) on specific keywords.
