If your team purpose is not a regular topic of conversation,
these workshops will be an absolute waste of time. Here are five
ways to integrate your purpose into the day to day workings of your
team:
- In your weekly meeting, set aside 10 minutes to ask your team
questions that explore your purpose, like How did purpose influence
your decision? What have you learned from making that
decision?
- Have your team update business processes that run counter to
your purpose and values. This practice will help your team take
ownership of the change process and come up with new ideas to
improve your customer's experience.
- When you hire, use your values and purpose to frame up hiring
questions. For example, you can ask candidates: What personal
values do you hold close? How have you lived the values of other
employers? These questions will help you find a candidate who has
experience working and living up to values.
- Develop a quarterly awards program to recognize team members
who have lived your purpose statement and values.
- Rename your team meeting from the typical 'CS team weekly
meeting' to '[team brand]' meeting. This little nudge helps you to
reinforce your brand.
Expect conflict, friction and pushback around your purpose
statement and values. It's common for team members and other
leaders to challenge you and ask why you have your specific
Customer Success values system.
To address this help your team to create their purpose stump
speech, which articulates what the purpose means to them. This
speech will help you pre-emptively reject initiatives that you'd
normally face. If it doesn't align with achieving your purpose,
give your team and yourself permission to say no.
The workshops are fun and motivating, but they are not enough to
drive change. It's on you as the leader to maintain the momentum
you create.
