3: The challenge of virtual education

Today, we can watch full business school lectures from around the globe, watch instructional videos or run long online learning sessions. Each education format needs a particular understanding in how to get the message across. In classical education settings, like schools, it is still often the 'front to the audience setting' - a simple but hierarchical situation. We are trained to learn in this situation.

As virtual education becomes more a part of our learning settings we have to understand the dynamics of the virtual space. As the media philosopher Marshall Mcluhan said in the 80's: "The media is the message". In other words, we have to understand the conditions and demands of the media itself. If we think of a computer or laptop not so much as an information channel, but more as a stage, then everything changes. We have to take into account that we somehow step on this stage and play on it. If we do so, we need to develop a self understanding, which balances information and visual appearance. Further, we have to train our visual capability to read the virtual situation, as it is completely different from a life situation.
