A beginning player must understand the role of each of the types of pieces in the game. It is worthwhile to spend some time reflecting on their functions, on the unique abilities of each of them, and on their overall value. This is often glossed over in books on chess, but the truth is, there is no game of chess without them. Appreciate what they do.
With the exception of the Knight, all pieces move as far as they are allowed until they reach another piece. If the piece is one of the player's own, then movement is obstructed. If the piece belongs to another, it can be taken, unless the piece that is moving is a pawn. Special rules apply to how and when pawns can capture other pieces.
In every game, the opponent with the white or lighter colored pieces will go first. Who gets that side can be determined by a third party holding a pawn of each color behind his or her back, it can depend on who won the last game, or by a roll of the dice. Or you can make up your own method.
