Whiplash occurs when the ligaments in the neck sustain sprains or strains. During a motor vehicle collision, the neck can undergo rapid and forceful back-and-forth movements, causing a sudden jolt to the ligaments, tendons, and nerves in the neck. As a result, the neck stiffens, severely limiting its range of motion until the ligaments can relax again.
