Music in a video really enhances the mood and helps engage the audience. However organizations have been successful raising money on crowdfunding sites with videos that don't have music. The choice of adding music is really up to you. However here are some notes on music:
Most music is not free - you cannot legally place copyrighted music in your video without paying a license unless you have direct consent from the artist or studio. A music license fee can run anywhere from $200 for an up and coming artist to well over $20,000 for a superstar. A good resource for purchasing low cost music licenses is Musicbed or the Vimeo Music Store. They have quality artists for a relatively low cost.
License Free Music is available, but often not the best quality - you can find music online licensed under "Creative Commons" where it is free to use. If you do choose to go this route make sure it is free to use for commercial purposes, most sites will let you filter for this. Great sites to go to for "Creative Commons" music are: FreeMusicArchive, CCMixter, and SoundCloud.
If you are a non-profit organization there is high quality music you can use for free - artists such as Moby provide great music for non-profit organizations to use for free.
Looping software - Looping software let's you take pre-recorded music loops to create custom music. This is often a great choice for lower budget videos since they are low in cost, allow you to create music that matches your video, and is almost always license free for commercial purposes. Garageband which comes with OSX is a very popular and easy to use looping software. The software comes with thousands of free loops and will allow you to create custom music for your video.
