Customer Development is all about listening and learning about the customers past behaviour and current mindset. Do this by spotting and recording Signals. Signals are landmarks to evaluate business opportunties from the customers' perspective.
If you're a beginner, there are a few signals to listen for: goals, obstacles, attempted solutions, and other people. When you hear these, dig and learn more.
As you get more advanced, you'll start to spot other types of signals: jobs-to-be-done, product categories, interest triggers, decision triggers, budgets, measurements, allies, experts, information sources, next best alternatives, snap decisions, deliberate decisions.
