From Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to the Doughnut. Instead of a focus on GDP it is time to discover how to thrive in balance. It was originally developed as a way of understanding manufacturing output in the period between World War I and World War II. The problem with GDP, though, is that it is a fairly narrow metric, originally developed for economies where there was a strong focus on goods. GDP by its very nature neglects those things which are not paid for with money yet are fundamental for a thriving society, for example meeting human rights within the means of our life-giving planet1.
