3. Use the Right Cutting Technique

The type of cut you should use on a tree tends to vary according to how big the tree is. For instance, when cutting down large trees that have a diameter larger than the length of the chainsaw bar, one of the most effective tree felling techniques for the job is to use a plunge cut.

A breaking bar, as well as several felling wedges, should also be used. To cut down large trees, create a directional notch from two sides. Make a top cut into the trunk at about a 60-degree angle. As soon as you've reached a depth that's a quarter of the tree, move to the other side and complete your directional notch.

You'll then need to make a horizontal undercut that meets your top cut, creating a straight line. Now that you have a notch carved out facing the felling direction, you can now create a plunge cut by inserting the chainsaw bar nose into the tree trunk behind the location of the hinge.

Saw away from the hinge that's about the width of your chainsaw bar. Next, saw around the trunk carefully until you reach the middle, then insert a felling wedge. Continue sawing until the chainsaw bar is parallel to the directional notch, then insert another felling wedge to force the tree to fall. The breaker bar can also be used to speed up the fall.
