Fuel Classifications

----------

NOTES

A3: The final way to classify fuels is by the methods that should be used to extinguish a given class of fire. Here there are 6 main classifications of fuel

  • Class A-Ordinary combustibles
  • Class B-Flammable liquids and gases
  • Class C-Electrically energized
  • Class D-Flammable metals
  • Class K-Cooking oils/grease fires.

Depending on the category of fuel, the fire should be attacked with a different type of suppression agent.

This figure shows that there are differences in the classifications of fuels and suppression agents by this method depending on which country you are in.

Since this kind of system is not universal, caution must be taken when using this method to discuss fire behaviour.
