Thermal Inertia

----------

NOTES

Very closely related to thermal inertia is the concept of thermally thick and thermally thin solids.

Thermally thin materials will conduct heat through their mass quickly, where thermally thick materials will conduct heat through their mass more slowly.

The door handle above will transfer heat quickly to its far side quickly - it is thermally thin

The wood of the solid or hollow doors above will not transfer heat to its far side quickly - it is thermally thick (it will however have a quick rise of surface temperature on the surface exposed to heat and thus be prone to ignition.
