Convection

----------

NOTES

Convention is heat transfer by circulation within a medium such as a gas or a liquid (NFPA921-2017, 3.3.39).Convection occurs in moving fluids.

It is important to realize though that convection is the primary mode of heat transfer early in the growth of a compartment fire (G&P, Pg. 196) and also plays a role in heat transfer at any location where the hot smoke travels.

The most familiar example of convection is the movement of the water in a boiling pot of water. As the pot is heated by conduction from the hot stove element, the water near the bottom of the pot is heated, the heated fluid rises, and the cooler water sinks down to replace it.
