Flash point is utilized in the classification of flammable liquids. Depending on the measured value of the flash point, liquids are grouped as to whether they are highly flammable, flammable or combustible liquids.

A combustible liquid is a liquid that has a flash point that is at or above 37.8C (100F). (NFPA 921)

A flammable liquid is a liquid that has a flash point below 37.8C (100F).

When the flash point drops below 32°C liquids are classified as highly flammable. (NFPA 921)

Highly flammable liquids are additionally separated by boiling point: above or below 37.8°C (100°F).
