Indicators of possible backdraft:

• Pulsating smoke "building breathing";
• Closed windows and doors with yellowish-grey smoke seeping out then drawing in;
• Lack of visible flames - doors and windows hot - discoloured window glass - windows cracked from heat;
• Possible whistling sound around doors and windows;
• Pulsating raising and lowering of smoke layer inside.
