Characteristics of cedar building materials:

  • Cedar shingles and shakes are used as roofing and siding material. Shakes are usually thicker, with a textured face, while shingles are thinner and smooth faced.
  • In Canada, there are two main species of cedar - Eastern White and Western Red, with the western variety being darker and slightly more durable.
  • Cedar is a light wood with natural oils that resist insects and rot, and as it ages the wood turns grey naturally.
  • Cedar wood is commonly used in exterior decking and trim elements for its natural resistant properties. However, cedar is more brittle than other woods and is not usually good for structural use like other dimensional lumber, such as spruce, pine or fir.
  • The quality of cedar shingles and shakes are classified by their clarity, straight edges and squared butt end. Premium quality (Grade A or #1) are used for roofing and siding, while lower grades are used for utility and outbuildings.
SAFETY WARNING! Breathing in cedar dust may lead to respiratory problems and other issues. When cutting and milling cedar, it is important to wear a respirator mask for dust and particulates.
