Attic Space

The space inside a roof structure is called an 'attic' and some older buildings may have very large attic spaces that sit atop the main structure. Now more than ever, it is critical to understand how to treat these spaces for deep energy retrofits with insulation and venting.

LISTEN...Part 1

IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS FOR ATTIC RETROFITS:

Adding insulation and air sealing strategies to an existing attic space needs special consideration for the following:

  • Depth & Type of insulation added for flat ceiling area
  • Depth & Type of insulation in cathedral ceilings, scissor trusses AND tight spaces - i.e. wall plate - rafter slope junction
  • Air sealing and insulation around ceiling penetrations, especially areas of high heat / moisture.
SAFETY WARNING: Always hire professionals with attic experience - insulation, electrical, and heat / moisture training and certifications.

LISTEN...Part 2

The diagram below points to common areas of concern for attic retrofits:

A) Bathroom Fans: Requires careful sealing, insulated ducting and electrical connection.

B) Stack Pipe: Requires sealing at ceiling penetrations and water proofing / drainage at roof slope

C) Rafter / Wall Plate Junction: VERY IMPORTANT! Ventilation space over insulation must be maintained under roof deck - use rafter baffles or similar to ensure proper space allowance.

D) Attic Hatch: Hatch requires insulation and robust air sealing. Consider adding an attic hatch box assembly.

E) Pot Light Fixture: Careful sealing and insulation required, with appropriate heat-resistant materials.

F) Chimney Penetration: Requires air sealing at ceiling junction and heat resistant materials for insulation & caulking.
