Ventilation Systems

LISTEN...

Providing for the mechanical exchange of air in a building is a must for high-performance building envelopes. Balanced ventilation in line with HVAC systems may create better indoor air quality and increased occupant comfort.

A heat recovery ventilator. Eastern Ontario.

The two main functions of a ventilation system are to do the following:

  • Bring in FRESH air from outside the building, and...
  • EXHAUST stale air from inside the building.

An HVAC technician will install equipment for ventilation in the form of an Heat Recovery Ventilator or HRV.

Humidity may also be regulated with ventilation equipment - an Enthalpy Recovery Ventilator or ERV does the same job as an HRV, with the added function of exchanging air borne moisture vapour.

Specific areas in a building will be targeted for either fresh air supply or exhaust:

  • FRESH AIR: Bedrooms and living areas.
  • EXHAUST: Bathrooms, kitchen, utility rooms

NOTE: Ventilation systems are part of the HVAC system, and require certified technicians for proper installation and balancing. Your energy advisor will work closely with these technicians to create the optimal ventilation strategy.
