Thermal Bridging

A material that bridges between the warm interior and the cold exterior is called a THERMAL BRIDGE.

Common thermal bridges:

  • Plates - top and bottom plates, mud sills /sill plates
  • Studs - corners, jacks, metal studs on exteriors
  • Rafters - especially at top plates
  • Plywood subfloor
  • Beams
  • Metal flashing

Thermal bridging becomes more pronounced when a building is tightly sealed and super insulated.
