The EFFECTIVE R-Value of an assembly is the thermal properties ALL of the layers - from interior to exterior - added together. This also considers the CONDUCTIVITY of parts within an assembly to get the most accurate value.

When measuring all of the pieces in an assembly, the properties of each material are counted with their thickness to get a number representing its total thermal resistance capacity or EFFECTIVE R-Value.
