Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV): a motor vehicle having permanently attached truck or delivery body, bus, or truck tractor. Not motor vehicles <4500 kg, ambulances, hearses, fire vehicles, mobile cranes, motor homes, tow trucks, historic vehicles or pick-up trucks with MGW ²6,000 kg. Exemptions: In-Transit permits (Reg. 628); Plates / permits under HTA 7(24)(g) or (h) for manufacturers and dealers (repair, customize, test, modify or transport purposes); Bus, or lease vehicle ²30 days, for personal use (moving van rentals) without compensation.
gross weight: Actual total weight of vehicle, trailer(s) and load.
highway: common & public highway, street, avenue, parkway, driveway, square, place, bridge, viaduct or trestle, any part of which is intended for or used by the general public for the passage of vehicles; includes area between lateral property lines.
intersection: area within the prolongation/connection of lateral curb lines or, if none, then of the lateral boundary lines of 2 or more highways that join at angle, whether or not they cross.
motor vehicle: any vehicle driven or propelled by other than muscular power but not motor vehicles run only on rails, motorized snow vehicle, traction engine, farm tractor, self-propelled implement of husbandry or road-building machine, or otherwise specified in the HTA.
park / parking: standing a vehicle, occupied or not, except while actually engaged in loading/unloading merchandise or passengers.
Registered Gross Weight (RGW): The amount of RGW determines the fee paid for truck licence plates. RGW must be at least equal to the actual weight of the truck, trailers and load, including driver, passengers, fuel, cargo. RGW is located on the right (plate) portion of the ownership.
roadway: part of highway that is improved, designed or ordinarily used for vehicular traffic; does not include the paved or gravel shoulder.
stand / standing: when prohibited, means the halting of a vehicle, whether occupied or not, except for the purpose of and while actually engaged in receiving or discharging passengers.
stop / stopping: halting a vehicle, even momentarily, occupied or not, except to avoid conflict with other traffic or at directions of a police officer or a traffic control sign or signal.
vehicle: any vehicle drawn or propelled by any kind of power, including muscular power, but not a motorized snow vehicle or street car.
young driver: a driver who is under 22 years old.
