Handling Q & A Sessions

Some speeches require either than questions be allowed during the speech or that there is a question and answer session immediately after the prepared remarks.

Here are some guidelines for handling questions:

  1. Make it clear up front if questions will be entertained during the presentation or if there will be time after the formal presentation for discussion.
  2. Call on people in order that they raise their hands, if that is how people indicate they have a question.
  3. Always try to address a question, even if it seems off-topic or if you don't have a ready answer. You can always promise to get the needed information and supply it to whomever asked the question.
  4. Don't be afraid to pause and collect your thoughts before asking a tough question.
