If your product is an actual "thing" you should actually build an initial prototype - even if the first one is made out of Styrofoam. This will allow the people you present it to to visualize, touch and in some cases get a feel for what the actual product will look like and potentially behave/operate. Again, the concept is to gain insights from potential customers in order to determine the most basic set of features necessary to create a gain.
