Most people & organizations have no problem explaining WHAT they're doing: you're raising money for something.

The thing is, every foundation, church, college, and Girl Scout troop is raising money for something.

And it's not very difficult to explain HOW you're doing it either: you're crowdfunding! But very few crowdfunders ever get to WHY they're raising money.
