It is so easy (and cheap!!) to eliminate chemical cleaners from
your home. You probably already have everything you need to clean
your home in your pantry right now.
My go-to staples for cleaning are: vinegar, baking soda (and
washing soda), olive oil and lemons.
- Vinegar is an all-star when it comes to
cleaning your home. It's cheap, effective and can be used to clean
almost anything. It won't "99.99% of bacteria" like some commercial
cleaners (and that's ok!), but it will kill important ones, like
salmonella and E.coli. Here's a great resource that gives you
a list of all the ways you can use plain white
vinegar to clean throughout your home. Below I'll list a few
basic recipes for cleaning recipes.
- Baking Soda: Baking soda is a naturally
occurring material, present in most organic life forms. It's
non-toxic, multi-purpose and best of all cheap! Baking soda and its
cousin, washing soda, are some of your best assets for
chemical-free cleaning. (It's also a natural deodorizer, and helps
to remove unwanted smells from your fridge and other areas of the
home). Here's a list of all the ways you can use baking soda to
clean around the house.
- Olive Oil: Great for polishing stainless steel
and wood furniture, as well to clean cast iron pans and repair
scratches on leather furniture.
- Lemons: Lemons are a natural disinfectant and
stain remover because of their acidity. The skins, when added to
your cleaning solutions, will also give off a pleasant scent.
