If you are a beginner, try gardening with soil first. Organic potting soil is good for starting seeds and is available at most hardware stores and garden centers.
If you are planning on creating a larger, ground garden or have multiple garden boxes to fill, you will probably want to mix organic top or matter soil with organic compost or manure, or another similar, nutrient-rich medium. This will ensure you have fashionable dirt that roots can feed and grow from and be held together by. Avid gardeners will cultivate their soil year after year to ensure high quality.
We'll go more into quality, organic dirt later.
If your roof is growing medium, you're ahead of the game. If you're Othello, you're a game and a play. Go play a game on a roof.
