Activity: Assessing How You Are Currently Spending Time

We live in the age of distraction.

Because of that, we need to pay special attention to what we spend our time on.

Here's a simple way to tally the number of hours you spend each day on activities, and how to prioritize where your time is spent.

  1. First, assess how many hours you spend on each daily activity.
  2. Once you have total daily expenditure, multiply it by 7. That's total time spent on the activity in one week .
  3. Do this for every activity, and then add all these times for the grand total.
  4. Then subtract the grand total from 168 (total hours in one week).
  5. Now go back to that list and be honest with yourself. Which one of those activities is a time waster, and which actually serve you well?

FOR EXAMPLE:

Internet & TV: ____ X 7 = ____ (your weekly total).
Work or University:
Socializing with Friends:
Spending time with partner/family:
Working out:
Reading for pleasure:
Sleeping:
Preparing food / Eating:
Commute:
Other:

If you find that (like me) that a major source of your distraction is non-productive time spent on the internet, then I would definitely recommend installing the Google extension called StayFocusd (not misspelled), which Cvijetic recommends. StayFocusd allows you to set a limit on time and websites you don't want to spend time on. It doesn't mean you need to get rid of those activities together. In fact, it might even result in you being more connected and focused than ever (which was definitely the case for me).

Aside from doing doing a "roundup" of all the time that I spend on various activities throughout the day, installing StayFocusd was the first major change that I made to my daily routine and it has helped noticeably. So far, so good!
