Drawing the Consumer onto Your App's Landing Page
The consumer's first impression of your app is your app icon. This visual cue gives them an idea of what they can expect from the app, and the first idea of what type of quality they can expect from the app.
The title confirms that the consumer has found an app that matches what they were looking for, and the star rating is a quick indication of what previous consumers thought. The higher the rating, the more likely the consumer will continue to the app's landing page or download it on the spot.
Your icon should be simple and clear. It is important to find the one illustration that captures the essence of what your app is about.
Being simple and clear doesn't mean that the icon cannot be detailed. Use gradients, highlights, reflections, and any other design tactics to make your icon pop, as long as it doesn't make the icon feel cluttered.
Lastly, the design of your app icon should match the design used inside the app. In the Apple App Store, a single screenshot is shown on your search results page. Work on matching the design between this screenshot and the icon.
