Step #1 - Improve insulation

A significant portion of your yearly energy consumption will go towards heating and cooling your home. As a result, improving a home's insulation will often lead to immediate decreases in energy consumption. This is especially the case if the insulation hasn't been repaired or improved in a few years.

You can start this process by finding an insulation inspection checklist online and going over that list point-by-point. Look for air gaps around doors, windows, and between your floorboards. Check to make sure your roof insulation isn't coming apart or infested with mold. It's also a good idea to see if the weather stripping around your doors and windows need to be replaced.

Even if nothing needs to be immediately repaired, you can probably still save money by investing in more efficient types of insulation. You can research some options on your own, or hire an HVAC professional to inspect the home and suggest areas that could be improved.
