Here are some simple steps you can take to set up your meditation area:
1) Choose an area of your home to meditate regularly. It is best to set up an area of your home that will always be used for meditation and will only be used for meditation. When it is obvious that the area is for meditating, you will be reminded whenever you see it.
2) Choose something you can sit on comfortably. Many meditators choose a sheepskin rug to sit on as it provides insulation between you and the magnetic pull of the earth. If you don't have this a cushion will do. If you have ankle or knee problems you may even find you benefit most from a chair to sit on for the time being.
3) Minimize distraction to your senses. Avoid having any baking in the overn while you are meditating, it could pull you out of your meditation. Other smells such as incense could distract you too, as little odor as possible would be best. Perhaps some earplugs would be good to wear to tune out the noises from the world around you. Too many noises and you could find your inner peace destroyed as you curse the traffic outside.
4) Set up this area with reminders of the people who inspire you. If you follow a specific spiritual tradition you may want to have pictures or statues of deities or gurus facing you. If you do not follow a tradition you may wish to have examples of people who represent who you would like to become, maybe Gandhi, Mother Theresa or Martin Luther King, JK Rowling, Oprah, whoever floats your boat!
