What Is Yoga?

Over the last number of years people have associated the word yoga with postures that groups of people perform in classes or at home. The word yoga simply means "union" and specifically union with our souls.

In yoga tradition there are a number of different pathways, talked about in detail in the texts Bagavad Gita and The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali.

Hatha Yoga is a system of asanas that help prepare people to properly perform meditation and give us awareness of the internal state of our body.

Karma yoga is the performance of selfless service to humanity, service in which the doer has no attachment to rewards.

Bakti Yoga is a form of worship that never ends, aiming to see divinity in every creature.

Jnana Yoga is known as the path of wisdom whereby we can achieve spiritual liberation using discrimination in life.

Raja Yoga is direct realisation of spirit through the practice of meditation that deals with energy and consciousness. Kriya Yoga is one such form. This is the yoga this particular author has experienced.

All these paths lead to the same place, that of union. There are many organizations that offer these teachings, listen to your intuition and discern and you will find one that resonates with you.
