Is Your Child Ready?

Before you start potty training, it is important to know if your child is in fact ready to start. Many parents begin potty training around 18 months, some a bit later and the process for some children can last up to the age of 3 or older.

In general, girls tend to be toilet trained slightly earlier than boys. Regardless of their gender, waiting until they show signs of readiness will make the process that much easier. The following are some cues to tell you if your child is ready to start potty training:

  • Shows an interest when others are using the toilet
  • Walks, climbs steps and pulls down pants
  • Can understand instructions
  • Able to express when they need to urinate or have a bowel movement
  • Has predictable bowel movements throughout the day
  • Can keep a diaper dry for more than two hours
  • Demonstrates a desire to please parents and act like a big boy/big girl

If they are not ready to potty train, wait for a few weeks or months and reconsider. Rushing them into it may discourage them from using the potty when they are older.
