To encourage your child to use the potty, find a reward that
would appeal to your child. You can use this to motivate and reward
your child during the potty training process. Every child is
motivated by what interests them but here are a few ideas:
- Stickers: If your child likes stickers, give them a sticker
every time they successfully use the potty. You may want to use
stickers to chart their progress. There is a wide array of potty
training charts available online to help you keep track- many
featuring popular children's characters.
Potty Training Concepts offers many of these charts for
free.
If you are worried that the novelty of stickers may wear off
quickly, consider offering a reward once they secure a certain
number of stickers on their chart. The reward could be a new toy, a
trip to the park, etc.
- Toys: Buy several small toys or games from the Dollar Store and
offer your child a chance to pick one time every time the/she has
potty success.
- Experiences: If your child enjoys reading with you and insists
on an extra book at bedtime, use this as a reward for potty
training. Offer to read an extra book at bedtime if he/she goes
potty. Or, reward them with a trip to the park or indoor playground
for their potty-training success.
- Treats: While some parents offer treats or candy to children as
a reward, others are reluctant to go this route fearing it will
create bad eating habits down the road. It depends on your child.
If you don't need to use treats to motivate your child then avoid
it. If candy is the only thing that works for your child then offer
a small treat with each success.
