Once they start to use the potty or toilet, it is important to show them how to clean themselves. Show them how to wipe correctly with toilet paper. This is especially important for girls who should wipe from front to back to avoid spreading bacteria. They may continue to need your help to clean up particularly after a bowel movement but they will eventually become more independent.

After they are cleaned up, empty the potty contents into the toilet and encourage your child to flush the toilet.

Ensure they know that they must wash their hands thoroughly before leaving the bathroom.
