To begin using Evernote, simply go to Evernote website and choose the free Evernote registration option:

Next, install the automatically suggested download option, run the file and finish the installation. Afterwards, go to your computer's start menu, select Evernote and make sure to save it as a desktop or taskbar icon for quick & convenient desktop access.

After you've completed your registration, you will also be able to access your account via browser on the Evernote website:

To ensure you'll be all set to make the most out of your Evernote, go ahead and install the Evernote mobile extension as well via the Evernote product page dropdown menu and follow the instructions.
