Qualifications: Trade Designations & Training

In the HPCN Portal, the Qualifications Trade Designations & Training Stage has multiple sections. It begins with a set of instructions that apply to all of the training requirements. Read these carefully before continuing. It looks like this:

Remember: The same employee must complete all of the required training. You cannot split training between employees.

If you offer heat pump services: We require a minimum of 1 supervisor or lead installer - who will be responsible for the heat pump retrofit work - to complete all of the mandatory qualifications.

If you offer furnace services: We require a minimum of 1 gas ticketed individual to complete all of the mandatory qualifications.

Inviting your Employees to Complete the Training

At this point, you will need to invite your employees to complete the required training. To do this, scroll up in the HPCN Portal until you see the "Employees" section on the right-hand side of the page. Click on the "Invite Employee" button.

Enter their email address, one at a time, and click "Invite".

Remind your employees to check their email inboxes/spam folders for an invite and click on the "Accept Invitation" button. It will look similar to this:

Clicking the "Accept Invitation" button will open up a web page where they will be asked to create a Guides.co account to access the training.

Once they have created an account, they will be brought to the training landing page where they see the required training laid out for them. This is the same training as you see in the HPCN Portal.

Completing the Trade Designations & Training

There are two trade designations (which may or may not be mandatory depending on the services you offer) and four training courses to complete:

1) Trade Designation - Gas Fitter

  • This is a mandatory designation if you have indicated that you offer furnace services in stage 1 (Company Information).
  • As the Company Admin, you will need to upload a gas ticket for a minimum of 1 licensed employee. This should be the employee who will be taking the mandatory training.

2) Trade Designation - Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic

  • This is an optional designation if you have indicated that you offer heat pump services in stage 1 (Company Information).
  • As the Company Admin, you can to upload any Red Seal certificates that your employees hold.

3) Retrofitting with a House-as-a-System Approach

  • This is a mandatory course.
  • Employees that you have invited can complete the course directly in Guides. The table at the bottom shows you the progress of each employee.
  • To view/complete the course yourself, click on the "View Training Resources" button and then select the course from the training Hub.

4 & 5) External Courses: TECA/HRAI (2 courses)

  • These are mandatory courses.
  • Employees have the choice to complete the courses from either TECA or HRAI but cannot mix and match.
  • These courses are hosted by a third-party. Employees that you have invited can view a set of instructions (in a Guide) that introduces the course options and provides a link to register. The table at the bottom shows you whether an employee has seen the instructions (Guide). It does not tell you whether an employee has signed up for the course or not.
  • To view the instructions (Guide) yourself, click on the "View Training Resources" button and then select the course from the training Hub.

**After completing the training to this point, you can continue with your registration and become an HPCN member. Once at least 1 person has completed each of the mandatory qualifications above, the next stage in the Portal will unlock. The final training course (#6 below) must be completed within 6 months of starting your Qualifications Stage to maintain your HPCN membership.**

6) Quality Installation of Forced Air Furnace and Air Source Heat Pump Retrofits in BC Homes

  • This is a mandatory course BUT you can complete your HPCN registration while your employees complete this course; they have 6 months from the date you started the Qualifications Stage, to complete the course.
  • This course is hosted on a separate website. Employees that you have invited can view a set of instructions (in a Guide) that introduces the course and provides a link to register. The table at the bottom shows you whether an employee has seen the instructions (Guide). It does not tell you whether an employee has signed up for the course or not.
  • To view the instructions (Guide) yourself, click on the "View Training Resources" button and then select the course from the training Hub.
