Working from a Plan

All construction and renovation work requires a written contract with the client and some kind of plan, on paper or in digital form. And for most jobs, big or small, a building permit may also be required.

  • PLANS: For every job, make technical drawings that show construction details, locations of systems and specifications for material installation. Keep track of completions and changes. Consider hiring a professional designer as part of your job costing.
  • BUILDING PERMITS: Consult with local municipal building officials to obtain the proper permits for the work you're undertaking. Significant changes to a building envelope, structural changes or changes to systems like plumbing or electrical require a permit. Ensure that your work is cleared with your local building office.
  • CONTRACTS: Always work to a written contract. Clearly outline the scope of work, describing tasks, milestones, payments, contingencies and agreed upon goals before the contract closing. Consider a consultation with a legal professional who specializes in construction contracts.
Working from drawings, specifications and contractual agreements is a must for ANY construction or renovation work.
