Currently, labeling programs are voluntary and builders/home owners can choose to be involved in them or not. In the future the labeling of houses will most likely be mandatory across the country. Certain Provinces and cities are planning on using mandatory labeling in 2018. This means that any home that is being built or sold, will need to have an energy label associated with the home

Having the energy label makes it easier for home buyers to determine which house is more energy efficient. It essentially gives you the gas mileage of a home. If two homes for sale have the same square footage, and both are labeled, you know it will be less expensive and more comfortable to live in the home with the better rating.
