Insulation & Air Sealing Contractors

Specialist trades on a job who only install specific elements or materials may be individuals or small company contractors. This type of sub-contracted work may often happen with large residential developers and commercial construction.

Each of the roles described here are based on idea of specialization - breaking out one or two particular tasks in construction or renovation, to become a subject matter and applications expert. The goal of this specialization is to gain speed and proficiency, taking on many jobs that require repetitive actions and material installs. This kind of fine tuning can minimize the need for tools while maximizing the potential for profit as crews become faster.

What is an INSULATION CONTRACTOR?

Blown in loose fill fibre insulation - London, Ontario (NetZero Insulation)

This type of contractor works exclusively with the installation of insulation on buildings, and in many cases they may specialize in one type of insulation product, such as:

  • Blown in fibre and batts
  • Spray foam
  • Insulated Concrete Forms (ICF)
  • Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs)

This kind of work may be charged by the coverage area or volume, or as a time and materials type of contract. In renovation and retrofit work, an insulation contractor may also have experience in energy audits, and may consult on 'whole home' improvements for energy efficiency.

What is an AIR SEALING CONTRACTOR?

Sealing a building for air tightness goes hand in hand with the insulation / thermal boundary installation, to create the most effective envelope performance. An air sealing contractor may install the following types of air barrier or sealing products:

  • Roll-type, woven fabric air barrier and weather resistant barriers (WRBs)
  • Atomized spray air sealant
  • Air tight drywall
  • Air tight exterior sheathing and tape systems
  • Window and door installations with low expansion spray foam and caulking
  • Polyethylene vapour barrier and air barrier application

Making a purposeful recognition of the importance of air sealing may have a significant effect on construction crews. If workers know that there is someone who is going focus their attention on airtightness, the quality of installation tends to be higher and completed with more care. Some places in Canada are using the term "air boss" and incorporating this role into their projects.

What is a BUILDING ENVELOPE SPECIALIST?

New wood trim and cladding - Perth, Ontario.

Combining the tasks of insulation and air sealing into one role begets the idea of a building envelope specialist - someone who's primary concern is the integrity and performance of the entire building envelope. This person may have experience in the practical aspects of materials installation, with the additional training or certification as an Energy Advisor.

A building envelope specialist could act as a consultant for contractors who would complete the physical work. The design and specification of materials, detailing for challenging areas and the quality control of insulation and air sealing work may fall within the responsibilities of this person.
