Problem:

Homeowner Question: After I had insulation upgrades done to my home, the smells in my kitchen are lingering after I finish cooking?

Cause: Why is this happening?

Now that your home is more air-tight, the air in the home remains inside longer, since less outside air is entering the house per hour. Because of this cooking smells can linger for longer periods of time.

Solution: Lingering Smells

  • The use of exhaust fans and range hoods to remove smells is a common option that works if installed correctly
  • If the home has an HRV it may need to be rebalanced or changed to a more appropriately sized unit
  • If the home does not have an HRV then they may want to consider one now
  • Consult a ventilation specialist to determine the best course of action
