Stale Air

Problem:

Homeowner Question: After I upgraded the insulation in my home, the air in my home is stale, why?

Cause: Why is this happening?

Now that your home is more air-tight the air in the home remains inside longer and is not being replaced as often and may not be circulating as often either. In a more airtight house, less outside air is entering the house per hour. Because of this, air becomes stale if it is not replaced mechanically or by opening windows.

Solution: Stale Air

  • If the home has an HRV it may need to be rebalanced or changed to a more appropriately sized unit
  • If the home does not have an HRV then they may want to consider one now
  • Consult a ventilation specialist to determine the best course of action
